This experiment has several parts and we are doing this experiment in 3 classes. After all of the classes have had a chance to try it, we are going to pay one randomly selected student privately in cash for one answer they give. If the answer comes from the decision making experiment, you will get paid according to the the instructions below. If the answer is from one of the other parts of the experiment you will receive a flat payment of $20 if your answer is correct. Money will be paid in cash or by venmo.
This first part is an experiment in decision-making. During the experiment we will refer to tokens instead of dollars. Your payoffs will be calculated in terms of tokens and then translated into dollars at the end of the experiment. In each decision, you will be asked to allocate tokens between yourself and a local charity: Feeding America Southwest Virginia (FASWVA). The primary function of FASWVA is to manage a Food Bank to secure large quantities of food for the hungry of Southwest Virginia. FASWVA is rated 97 out of 100 on Charity Navigator for its
Accountability and Transparency or a charity of your choosing.
We will refer to the tokens that you allocate to yourself as tokens that you Keep, and tokens that you allocate to the charity as tokens that you Pass to the charity. Each decision will involve choosing a point on a line representing a possible allocation to you (Keep) and the charity you chose (Pass). In each decision, you may choose any combination of tokens
to Keep and Pass – in other words, any combination of tokens to yourself and tokens to the charity – that is on the line.
